If there is no God, if all things were and are just random accidents, then who established our Moralistic Value System?
As you contemplate that profound question, let me present you with an easier one;
Are you familiar with the basic scientific term “Laws of Nature” or the importance of these natural laws to all life on Earth?
Simply put, the Laws of Nature are important to all life on Earth because they never change. They always have been, and fortunately for us, will remain predictably the same or “constant” in scientific lingo.
Example: One natural law of science that we all know and love (unless we take a bad fall), is Gravity. Thanks to gravity, and the “constant” reliability of it, we all stay planted firmly on the ground. I’m sure I don’t need to expand on the adverse effects if gravity were to suddenly change or cease all together.
That being said, if gravity is just the result of random natural processes, then why should it remain consistent, or constant?
How could we be certain tomorrow the “Law of Gravity” couldn’t simply change? If it could change, then what good would NASA’s science be for example, or any science, if everything was random and there were no constants for science to rely on?
All science, not just NASA’s, would be utterly useless. That is a quantifiable fact; there is simply no room for a speculative argument to be made otherwise.
So one must honestly consider, if the constants we rely on to sustain life, could not have happened by accident, then who or what is responsible for them? Who would you submit created these constant, absolute and unchangeable Laws of Nature?
At this point, assuming you have honestly considered the basic science presented to you, then you understand why even science itself cannot manufacture an argument against creation by intelligent design, the fact is, science supports creation.
So, rather than allow the mind to drift aimlessly searching for some half-baked hypothesis that science doesn’t support,
consider the facts I submit to you here, actual facts that science does support.
Natural Laws are consistent; because we have a consistent Creator who made these Natural Laws by design, and He has been consistent in upholding the universe by those laws.
Therefore, we can rightfully expect the Laws of Nature to remain constant, that is, for as long as the Creator of those laws chooses to uphold them.
That being said, and thankfully, God gave us a bit of insight to this time table when He said;
“While the Earth remains, seedtime, and harvest and cold, and heat and winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22.
Fortunately for us, we have a God who keeps His promises, and He cannot lie! Of course, the caveat here is, He said “while it remains”, with no particular timetable on that. We are subject to God’s timing, which thankfully is always perfect.
Now, setting Natural Laws in science aside for a moment, lets consider the unbreakable and Natural Laws in the Animal Kingdom; or one in particular, “Survival of the Fittest”, or strongest.
Would you agree that when animals kill one another for food or simply for dominance, that is a part of their nature?
Non-believers contend that we humans simply evolved from animals and now, we are just smarter animals.
If that were true, then why is it wrong for humans to kill or eat one another, or take what does not belong to us? We don’t get mad at lions for eating smaller or simply slower animals.
That also being said, both believers in God and non-believers can certainly agree on “Objective Morality.”
That is; there does exist absolute and binding morals instilled in humans regardless of individual opinions, such as; the torture and or cold-blooded murder of children and the elderly, that is simply not good, not acceptable, that it is “wrong”.
Often an argument of non-believers to the existence of God is that, He must be an immoral monster for allowing certain things, such as harm to children and the innocent or acts of judgment like a global flood in Genesis.
But what standard do non-believers have to claim there are Godless morals?
If life just evolved naturally from matter and energy then where do our immaterial laws of morality come from? Who established these laws? Did government, society or one individual?
If it were a tyrannical king, or government, who at some point in time decided that the imprisonment and murder of millions based on their ethnicity, was perfectly fine, such as Hitler’s “extermination” of the Jews, then what outside government could rightfully assert that such a grotesque action was in fact wrong, if that is their belief system and their society approves of it?
If we are just highly evolved animals, if murdering and stealing from others helps improve our own personal survival, then why shouldn’t we be free to murder and take what doesn’t belong to us. If I want to come to your home and take whatever I please to improve my life, whom including you can say it is wrong? It may be wrong for you, but right for me, correct?
If it were not for God, then what or who determined “Right” and “Wrong”? Don’t suggest it is just relative, we know innately when we are guilty of something, or when we have “wronged” someone. If not moral conviction from God, then what or who else is the ground for our value system, or for the foundation of our “morality”?
The world simply cannot operate based on arbitrary standards of morality. I submit to you that we all, innately know, what is good and evil, “right and wrong”, even those who grew up with no value system in their life to reflect upon. All of our “moralistic values”, are grounded in God.
No other explanation for common morality is, or can be based on truth.
You don’t need to be a scientist or philosopher to understand, that without God’s standards, we would have no sound basis for morality. Everyone could do whatever was right in their own eyes regardless of what anyone else thought or had to say about it.
Only God could have established within each and every one of us an innate moral compass that tells us, hurting the innocent is “wrong” or forcefully taking something from someone because we want it, is violating them, it is “bad”?
Without God’s divine commandments anything would be fair game. God is the lawgiver, and He has provided us a firm foundation for morality In His instruction manual, in His word, the Holy Bible.
Now we also know we have laws of logic, because the mind behind the universe and the laws, told us that we are a reflection of His Image, in Genesis 1:27.
“So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.”
Question: Which would you tell me is easier to believe; computers and cell phones with all of their complexities, both in physical design and organization function, came into existence by accident?
{you say it’s not the same, why?}
Would you try to convince even a room full of children much less your piers, that over time variations of stone and dust particles grouped together, and by some miraculous, oops, I’m sorry no miracles either, rather by some amazing even astronomical mathematical coincidence, the first computer was formed?
Then mind you, given even more time and more amazing yet inconceivable mathematical odds, the computer evolved into the perfect palm-size smart phone.
My guess, even the children would inately know that the cell phone was created by someone pretty smart, and not by dust and time?
Again, you may be compelled to say, “that is a ridiculous comparison”, but is it, really?
Consider these, the universe, matter, and anti-matter, the sun, the earth, gravity, our ecosystem, oxigen, laws of nature, life, the living cell, DNA, our reproductive systems, the eyeball, our five senses, and the list goes on, and on and on, and on!
Are not each and every one of these incredible wonders, not infinitely more sophisticated each in their own right, than a cell phone? Honestly!
David put it best in Psalm 32:9;
“Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle.”
When it comes to following God’s commands we should not be stubborn or obstinate or intractable. We must not turn our heads away and “stiffen the neck”, we must learn to yield and be pliable in His hands.
Yet there remain many obstinate Bolshie’s who not only hold out inspite of the evidence, but they attempt to convince God’s children (all of us) otherwise.
Well that being said, we also have laws of logic, because the mind behind the universe and the laws of logic are a reflection of His Image in Genesis 1:27.
I believe instinctively, though we may not understand it, we all innately know the truth to our existence, having been created by Him.
By God’s holy and loving nature, through His divine wisdom, He has provided us with absolute standards by which not only our actions will be measured, but also our thoughts.
These Moral Laws, our duties and responsabilities, are defined in God’s “Ten Commandments”.
Can you cite one or more of them?
